An interview with Matsepiso Majoro, Co-founder of Mahalseli Energy

My name is Matsepiso Majoro, Co-Founder of Mahalseli Energy – a renewable energy company in Lesotho providing solar off-grid solutions for rural electrification, solar thermal, and water supply.

Journey into the Sustainable Energy/Climate Sector

In 2023, my company launched an innovative and accessible solar pay-as-you-go business model, which provides access to basic electricity and financial inclusion to rural, low-income communities. Our mission is to electrify 50% of Lesotho’s rural communities and promote livelihoods. Growing up in a rural community as a child has played a significant role in shaping my passion for sustainable energy solutions. I witnessed first-hand how a lack of electricity can negatively affect the prospects of any child growing up in such an environment.

My journey in the sustainable energy space started in 2019 when my husband and I decided to grow our small operation into what is today – a leading Lesotho renewable energy company providing solar solutions for both water and electrification. The journey was very challenging, as just after launching, we were badly hit by COVID-19 and went into a complete shutdown. In 2022, we were able to reopen and have been growing beyond our expectations since then.

Contribution to the Clean Energy Transition

My business contributes to the clean energy transition by reducing carbon emissions, providing energy access to low-income communities, creating jobs for 35 young people, with women making up 50% of the workforce, providing solutions that improve learning environments for rural children, and providing water solutions for rural water supply and solar thermal.

Challenges and Barriers as a Woman

As a woman in the field of sustainable energy, I have faced challenges in accessing finance and breaking into a male-dominated industry. However, I was determined and resilient and pushed myself to work to the best of my abilities to achieve this dream. Helping me navigate this journey were networks and organizations that connected me with like-minded women and young people, provided inspiration and an opportunity to recharge.

Advice to Aspiring Women Entrepreneurs

Women looking to enter the energy space should pursue their passions and break through barriers, be consistent in their vision, believe in their abilities, and know that they can make it. They should also not forget to be kind to themselves.

Empowering women to take on leadership roles in the field of climate change is essential for driving innovation and creating a more sustainable future. Gaining equal access to finance is an essential part of this process.
