Achieving global climate goals and SDG7 mandates the equitable inclusion of women in the energy sector. Research underscores that integrating gender considerations into the energy value chain enhances productivity and economic outcomes. However, women-led SMEs still face significant financial challenges, particularly in emerging economies. Addressing these obstacles is essential for empowering women-led enterprises in clean energy and cleantech.
During the UNIDO Cleantech Days 2024, the Gender & Energy Compact convened a coffee session to address the financial barriers faced by women entrepreneurs. Success stories of overcoming these barriers were shared, along with insights on effective mechanisms and policies to empower women entrepreneurs.
Key observations from the session highlighted the need for inclusive decision-making and women-centred funds to bridge financing gaps; capacity building through training, mentorship, and robust policy guidelines; and the incorporation of gender lens investing to ensure equitable financial opportunities. Additionally, maintaining integrity and transparency in the investment process, as well as fostering innovation and entrepreneurship through valuable networks and collaborations, were emphasized.
Key recommendations include developing targeted capacity-building programs, conducting further research on innovative financing models, sharing success stories, and exploring partnership opportunities to support women entrepreneurs.
To amplify the success stories of women entrepreneurs, we are launching an interview blog series: Gender & Energy Compact Women Entrepreneurs Spotlights. This series will explore key themes such as the challenges and barriers these women have overcome, as well as their recommendations for aspiring women entrepreneurs in the sector.
Join us as we illuminate the journeys of these remarkable women, examining their challenges, successes, and the profound impact of their work on advancing a clean, sustainable energy future.
